Afro-Funk Voodoo – a blend of tradition and modernity
Formed in 2013 in Lyon under the leadership of Togolese singer Peter Solo, Vaudou Game fuses the spellbinding rhythms of Togolese and Beninese voodoo with 1970s Afro-funk, drawing inspiration from James Brown, Fela Kuti and the Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. Peter Solo, inspired from childhood by his uncle Roger Damawuzan (a leading figure in Afro-Funk Voodoo), has created a unique sound, both danceable and spiritual, where traditional Voodoo chants meet the power of funk and soul.
The band stands out for its socially conscious lyrics, driven by a contagious live energy that invites the audience into a trance and a moment of reflection. Their music, both festive and profound, draws on voodoo rituals whilst embracing influences from soul, R&B and Afrobeat.
Vaudou Game embodies a bold encounter between Africa and Europe, between the sacred and the festive. Their approach, both respectful of tradition and resolutely modern, has won over an international audience, making them ambassadors of contemporary Afro-funk. Their legacy follows in the footsteps of the great names of African music from the 1970s, whilst paving the way for a new generation of artists of mixed heritage.
Their success rests on this unique alchemy : conveying the cultural richness of Togolese voodoo, whilst making it accessible and universal through an irresistible groove.
Vaudou Game proves that music can be both a tribute to the past and a celebration of the present, a bridge between continents and generations.
