New album (his fifth) due for release in September 2027 with Underdogs Records
The son of a pastor from Ipanema, the Carioca João Selva is “one of the finest ambassadors of Brazilian music”, according to France Info.
But that’s not all… his musical world, sunny and exuberant, draws on a rich palette of musical influences: from Angolan semba to Cape Verdean funaná, via Caribbean zouk and Congolese rumba. In the truest (or perhaps purest) Brazilian tradition, he also assimilates the influence of North American music and freely incorporates elements from elsewhere into Brazil’s irresistible rhythms.
The result is an invigorating machine for dancing and dreaming that breathes new life into the Tropicalist revolution of the 1970s by offering a lively blend of samba, soul, jazz and funk.
